If you grew up with frizzy hair, chances are you had no friends, you were excluded from anything considered cool, and kids made fun of you. You probably would have preferred having two heads (with shiny straight hair!), three legs or four hands. Anything at all – but not frizz ! No matter how cute you might have been, or how groovy your clothes were, nothing kills a look like frizz.

Decades ago, even growing up with frizz would turn you into an outcast. There was absolutely nothing you could do with the technology or hair products of that time period in order to look better. You might be able to head to school looking decent, but something as simple as breaking a sweat in gym class could turn your hairdo into one scary looking mess.

Anyone with frizz, however, will try just about anything to get rid of the frizz – even if it only lasts through a hot date or important meeting. In the 60s, straightening kits were a big deal, but they caused lots of damage to their hair. Frequently, the hair looked worse after the treatment than before. The side effects were worse than the cure.

Ironing hair became popular as well. A precursor to the straightening flat irons of today, kids would pull out the iron before school and iron their skirts, blouses and then… Their hair. No one cared about the burned fingers – their hair looked pretty good, at least until lunch time. Frizz fights back and always wins. Even gym class can bring the frizzies back – start sweating and see what happens!

Mind you, frizz is a different enemy than naturally curly hair – which few people mind at all. Frizz resembles a Brillo pad, and in a pinch, could probably be used for heavy kitchen chores since it’s so hard and course. Even an expensive and time consuming blow dry at a high end salon isn’t going to keep your frizz straight and beautiful in a rain shower, or a walk on the beach at night.

Decades later, frizzy hair is still a major issue that salons and hair care companies have been battling with little success. Many victims of frizz would rather have science find a permanent and safe solution for the frizz instead of finding ways to get rid of wrinkles! Why? Because even the most beautiful complexion won’t make a women with a head of frizz look attractive. All eyes are on the hair.

Very few products on the market really help. No shampoo is going to cut down on the frizz, and no conditioner is going to show a difference. “Smoothing” lotions don’t do anything. The only realistic hope is to use some super hold gel and hair spray and use it like cement – put on enough, and your hair will be forced to stay in place.

The other option is a new process called keratinizing. It’s expensive but it lasts for up to five months. It doesn’t straighten the hair, but it softens it to the point that the hair gets so relaxed it just falls limp.
